Description

The Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment tool guides the home visitor in assisting clients with both immediate feedback on potentially harmful behavior and a longer-term solution through referral to additional treatment or resources beyond what the home visitor can provide. This module explains the use of the tool and teaches how best to do a brief intervention and how to use screening tools including Virginia's Behavioral Health Risks Screening Tool for Women of Childbearing Age.

Following the course, home visitors will:
- Gain knowledge about the prevalence and risks of domestic/intimate violence, mental health issues, smoking and substance use in pregnancy and early parenting, and why home visitors should screen for these risks
- Gain comfort in introducing these topics and administering several evidence-based screening tools
- Gain confidence in giving feedback and conducting a brief intervention with clients, using motivational interviewing skills
- Know how to make an effective referral for behavioral health services when indicated
