Description

"Terrible portents came about in the land of the Northumbrians and miserably afflicted the people, there were immense flashes of lightning and fiery dragons were seen flying in the air...and after that in the same year (793 AD) the heathen miserably devastated God's church in Lindisfarne by looting and slaughter" (Anglo-Saxon Chronicles). Understanding of the impact of the Vikings in shaping particularly western culture is increasing. As the first Europeans to visit and settle in North America, who were they? This class first looks at the Vikings in their Scandinavian homeland, and then discusses their impact in shaping the history of Europe and in particular France (Normandy), England, Ireland and western Russia.

Instructor: Clarence Geier was a professor of Anthropology and Archaeology at JMU for nearly 40 years where he taught courses in Native Americans, Celts and Vikings among others. He has conducted research in the historical and prehistoric archaeology of Virginia, with six edited books to his credit.

Suggested Reading: Hall, Richard, "The World of the Vikings", Thames and Hudson Publishers, 2007.
