This introduction to birding, one of the fastest-growing hobbies, will explore our local birds: year-round, winter, and summer residents, along with migrants that briefly pass through. Learn how to recognize birds by shape, size, behavior, plumage and habitat. Topics will include how to observe birds, birding etiquette, and use of equipment such as binoculars, cameras and field guides. We will explore backyard birding, attracting birds, and birding afield. This course will include both classroom sessions and field birding. Field birding trips will involve standing and some walking on trails with potential for inclines and uneven ground. We will choose two weekend mornings, probably Saturdays, based on agreeable weather and students' schedules. Outings will be three hours on site plus travel time, departing Harrisonburg around 8 AM and returning by early afternoon. Participants will be asked to have or purchase a birding field guide ($15- $25.) Binoculars are important for field trips and available in a wide range of prices (we will discuss options in our first class; prices for a suitable pair begin around $125).
Some Saturday morning meetings will be scheduled during this session.

Instructor: With a lifelong interest in nature, wildlife, and photography,

Diane Lepkowski is especially intrigued by birds. Since becoming a serious birder in 2009, Diane has used her photography to share her passion for enjoying, studying and protecting our feathered friends. She has offered presentations for the Edith J. Carrier Arboretum, Massanutten Regional Library and Rockingham Bird Club.
