Description

The course will examine responses to the Civil War by the period's notable writers. These responses were passionate, conflicted and variable; the authors themselves sometimes conflicted. Authors covered will include Emerson, Hawthorne, Melville, Whitman and Dickinson. Although written after 1865, Stephen Crane's "The Red Badge of Courage" and Ambrose Bierce's "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," will also be discussed. John Huston's 1951 film version of "Badge" will be shown, along with Bierce's "Occurrence." (All assigned readings should be widely available.)

Instructor: LLI member Robin McNallie grew up in Buffalo, N.Y. and received an undergraduate degree from St. Lawrence University and a graduate degree from Princeton in the field of English. For 33 years, he taught courses in literature, film, and writing at James Madison University. Since about 2000, he has taught approximately 20 courses in the Lifelong Learning Institute, all related to literature.
