Description

This three-day course will visit three different types of ecosystems typical of the Shenandoah Valley. This will include the Cowbane Prairie of Stuarts Draft, Maple Flats Swamp near Lyndhurst and the forests of the G.R. Thompson Wildlife Refuge. We will be on the lookout for any native plants or animals known to occur in these places and Nate will discuss the importance of their roles in the ecosystem. We will also discuss the characteristics and history behind each ecosystem. Members will meet at American National University for the first field trip for brief instructions and discuss carpooling. This class requires walking over uneven ground and standing for extended periods of time. Please be prepared with water, bug spray, nature guides, journals, cameras, phones, snacks, rain gear, walking sticks, and proper footwear. A signed JMU Assignment of Risk Waiver is required of all participants.

Instructor: Nate Miller is a native of Rockingham County, Virginia and a graduate of Eastern Mennonite High School. He holds a Bachelor degree in Environmental Science from Bridgewater College and a Masters in Landscape Architecture from Clemson University. He is a Professor of Horticulture at Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville and the owner of Simply Sustainable Landscapes LLC, a landscape design company. He is currently finishing work on a book Simply Sustainable Landscapes: Gardening with the EONS Theory for the Southeast.
