Description

Participants will learn to communicate effectively with limited vocabulary, but will feel confident with basic grammatical concepts and vocabulary through repetitive opportunities to communicate in class in Spanish. This class is appropriate for beginning conversation or for travel: greetings, interpersonal exchanges, likes/dislikes, ordering in a restaurant, asking directions, or basic information. Culture is also an important component of the course. As an introductory course, this level would be appropriate for someone who has never taken a Spanish course or who has not taken Spanish in a long time and needs a refresher. A student who is beyond knowledgeable and comfortable using basic grammar such as nouns, articles, adjectives, etc. would likely find this level too basic and would benefit instead from level 2 in session B.

Instructor: Guillermo (Gil) Fernández is a native of Nicaragua who came to the U.S. at age 11. His use of Spanish continued at home as a child, but through his public education in English he is deeply embedded in both languages and cultures. Gil has taught community Spanish classes for various audiences for six years.

All class meetings will be in the Blue Ridge Room except for October 5 which will be in the Sunnyside Room.
