Description

We will review Lincoln's early life and development, his political career, and his presidency, particularly his handling of the Civil War and the emancipation of slaves, including a discussion of the characteristics of Lincoln's leadership style which made him effective. We will reflect on how a frontier lawyer became a great wartime leader and evaluate his performance as president.

Instructor: Phil Stone is the President Emeritus of Bridgewater College, former president of Sweet Briar College and a lawyer. For 43 years he has conducted a ceremony in the Lincoln Cemetery to honor Lincoln and his Virginia relatives. He is the founder and president of the Lincoln Society of Virginia.
