Meet at the JMU R10 Lot behind Starbuck’s on Port Republic Road next to Interstate 81 if you want to carpool with others. Maps will be provided. In case of inclement weather, the rain date will be May 4, 2024. *There may be an additional fee for entry into the Orchard. Any fees required will be collected onsite. In the morning, we will visit Edible Landscaping where we will learn about and experience edible plants that we can landscape with and that will flourish in our area and climate. Plantings will be from flowers, herbs, bushes, and trees. A lecture will take place from 9:00 am – 11:00 am. The group will have lunch on your own tickets at Blue Stone Brewery from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm. After lunch, we will proceed to Chiles Peach Orchard where we will tour and experience this well-known apple and peach growing and processing facility from 1:30 – 2:30 pm. We will return to Harrisonburg at approximately 3:45 pm. There will be an opportunity to purchase items at these locations. Nate Miller holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from Bridgewater College and a Master’s in Landscape Architecture from Clemson University. He is a Professor of Horticulture at Piedmont Virginia Community College and the owner of a landscape design company. He is also a Landscape Designer for Messer Landscaping in Staunton, VA. Sandy Conrad is a current member and volunteer leader of LLI who also serves as a frequent co-teaching lead.
