Description

This multi-media rich course is in five parts with the first part being an introduction. Topics will include: computer/network basics and how things work, the history, evolution of the internet and social media, the current state of network/web/social media and ways to communicate including email, apps and cellphones. Next we'll discuss the "bad stuff": predators, trolls, stalking, porn, privacy/hacking/passwords/security/virus apps and reputation damage/self posting, and "drama." We'll talk about your phone options. Bring it to class! We'll talk about types, advantages, and what's on the market. We'll look at digital addiction, compulsive behavior, sleep issues, safety-texting dangers, hands free, microwaves, and provider options for families. On Family Day, we'll cover parenting, grand parenting and family considerations, children and screens, time management, educational efforts and partnerships, "safe netting", teen trends, texting, destructive behavior, sexting, bullying, and scams.

Instructor: Joe Showker is an innovator in the field of digital ethics and Internet safety throughout Virginia and the nation.
