Loneliness is on the rise in the United States. In fact, some scholars believe that we are experiencing an epidemic of loneliness. In this course, we will examine the mechanisms and consequences of loneliness. We will also explore the broader topics of social connection and disconnection. While the lectures will be centered on scientific studies of social behavior, we will discuss how to apply the science to improve our lives and the lives of others.

Dr. Natalie Kerr is a professor in the Department of Psychology at JMU, where she has taught for the past 18 years. She earned her Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University.
