This course will teach students about the works of Vincent Van Gogh by looking at his life and times, with a careful study of the works themselves. We will go beyond the myth and stereotypes of the "mad artist" by exploring Van Gogh's quest for meaning, personal expression, and connection with humanity. Van Gogh's journey began at 16 and ended with his death at 37, during which time he worked as an art gallery dealer, school teacher, Protestant lay preacher and painter. He created over 2,000 works of art during the last ten years of his life. With exploration of Van Gogh's artistic times and the influences on his work, we will enhance understanding of his work and legacy.

John Bell is a retired Professor of Art (Blue Ridge Community College). He is a practicing artist working in the painting and photography mediums and has traveled extensively in Europe including visits to sites related to Van Gogh's life in The Netherlands, Belgium, and France.
