This course will cover the history of Russia in the 18th and 19th centuries, starting with Catherine the Great and the Enlightenment. From there, we will move on to the Napoleonic Wars and the Golden Age of Russian Literature including Pushkin, Gogol, Tergenev, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy. After that, we will explore the Emancipation Reforms, the origins of the Revolutionary Movement, and new developments in music and art.

Mary Louise Loe is Professor Emerita at JMU and has taught in the History Department since 1973. She has her B.A. from the Uiversity of Wisconsin-Madison and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University. Her fields of specialty are Russian History, European History and Human Rights.
