James Madison University Outreach & Engagement has partnered with Career Step to help students train for a rewarding new career. Developed by a Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) education partner, the Computer Technician non-credit program is specifically designed to prepare students for the CompTIA A+ certification exams. Students learn about hardware, operating systems, networking, security, and troubleshooting as well as more specialized topics such as mobile devices, laptops, and printers. In addition to one-on-one support from experienced instructors throughout the course and access to personalized graduate support after graduation, students receive two e-textbooks, two quick-reference exam study guides, a computer repair toolkit, a power supply tester, a USB drive, and two CompTIA A+ certification exam vouchers.
The curriculum is built on the exam objectives published by CompTIA, and the midterm and final exams are even designed as mock exams that mirror the A+ exams so you can measure your readiness for the certification exams. With this specific preparation, you can be confident that you’re gaining the knowledge and skills needed to earn your CompTIA A+ certification immediately upon completion of the course. Two certification exam vouchers are also provided upon program completion to make it even easier to certify as soon as you graduate.
CompTIA A+ certification primarily focuses on Windows operating systems. In order to prepare you for this certification, the Computer Technician program does the same. The Computer Technician certification program can be completed on a Mac computer; however, all hands-on labs require access to a Windows operating system.
Students have 6 months to complete the non-credit program. Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a Certificate of Completion from James Madison University.
