A11 The Songbag Folk Music Primer: Chapters 1 - 5

For over 20 years Mel Lee hosted the entertaining and educational "Songbag" program on local public radio. It featured an eclectic range of traditional and folk music including information about the context of that music. He brings the philosophy behind that program to the LLI classroom with sessions highlighting five different topics. 1. The Scholars and Collectors - those who have preserved traditional music 2. A Beginner's Guide to Celtic Music - who were/are the Celts and what sets their music apart 3. Ballads: Child and Beyond - songs that tell stories and have done so for generations 4. The American Folk Revival - from Woody through The Kingston Trio and on to Dylan 5. The Folk Revival in the UK - happening about the same time as the American revival, the UK revival took a different course

Instructor: Mel Lee's experience with folk music began with Peter Paul and Mary and a $39 guitar. Since then his musical interests have grown broader and his guitars much more expensive. He has also expanded his range of instruments to include dulcimer, cittern, autoharp, and a variety of traditional woodwinds. Mel explored various traditional music forms through independent study while performing traditional songs and old-time music and Celtic music solo, with his wife Karen, and with several traditional music ensembles.
