F18B14 Water for the World: the New Oil?
For sustaining life, water is the Earth's most precious resource. A major challenge is: how to provide safe drinking water to one billion people and adequate sanitation to 2.6 billion people who currently lack these basic services? The course will cover the fundamentals of water cycles, water quality, water borne diseases, and the basic principles of water and wastewater treatment in the light of the competition for limited water resources.
Instructor: William Allen was a Professor in the Departments of Chemistry, Environmental Science, and Public Health Science at the University of Virginia. He was awarded fellowships for research in Norway and was a consultant for the International Atomic Energy Agency. He created the Office of Environmental Health and Safety at UVA.
