F18B17 History of American Musical Theatre
This course will explore the history of musical theatre, from "Showboat" to "Hamilton" with lots of listening to recordings and live musical examples. Various sub-genres of musical theatre will be explored, as well as looking at the major figures of the genre's development: George & Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Rogers & Hammerstein, Leonard Bernstein, Steven Sondheim, Stephen Schwartz, Andrew Lloyd Webber, as well as more contemporary figures. In addition, this course will look at musical theatre's relationship to other contemporary musical genres such as rock, pop, and hop hip.Instructor: Dr. W. Bryce Hayes maintains an active career as a conductor, teacher, church musician, pianist, accompanist, and singer. As a choral conductor Bryce is currently Associate Professor of Choral Music at James Madison University.
