F19A17 The Mythological Truth about Greek Gods and Heroes
This course will examine five areas of ancient Greek myth through literary, historical, and archaeological evidence. We'll explore The Olympian Gods, The Saga of Mycenae, The Saga of Troy, The Saga of Heracles, and The Saga of Theseus. We'll also examine the basic character of the myths and those who created them. Ultimately, we hope to gain a deeper appreciation of the myths and a greater understanding of the role of myth in the culture of ancient Greece.
Instructor: Michael Allain holds a PhD in Classics from The Ohio State University. He retired from Spotswood High School as a Latin teacher in 2006 and has taught a variety of courses including Ancient Greek, Latin, History, and Literature at JMU since the mid 1980s.
