F19A2 Celtic England and Ireland
While discussing the Celtic phenomon of tribal Europe, this course will serve as an introduction to the Celtic tribes of Iron Age Britain and Ireland. Conversations will include tribal social, poliltical, and religious issues including the activity of the powerful druids. The impact of the Roman empire and the interplay between emerging Celtic and Roman forms of Christianity will be discussed. The course will end with the coming of the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes from what will become Denmark and northern Germany.
Instructor: LLI member Clarence Geier was a professor of Anthropology and Archaeology at JMU for 40 years where he taught courses in Native Americans, Celts, and Vikings. He has conducted research in the historical and prehistoric archaeology of Virginia, with six edited books to his credit.
