War, Violence, and Philosophy
This course will examine the main philosophical approaches to war and conflict, especially 'just war' theory and pacifism. These approaches to war have pedigrees dating back at least to ancient civilizations. However, they have come under increasing scrutiny in light of terrorism, drone warfare, recent use of torture and pre-emptive attacks, and cyber-warfare. The class will include explication of different philosophies as well as lots of class discussion. Dr. Laura Yordy is a retired professor, having taught philosophy, religious studies, and ethics for over 16 years. At LLI, she has taught two previous courses: 'Moral Dimensions of Climate Change,' and 'World Religious Ethics.'Please contact our office regarding availability of this course:
