This course will examine the culture and families of the Blue Ridge Mountains, which later became Shenandoah National Park. First-person sources, photographs, music, letters, and other cultural artifacts of the families will set the foundation for understanding the removals in the period of industrialization, eugenics, and modernization in the United States. The instructor will also discuss the process of writing fact to fiction in developing her novel and staying true to the history of the removals and time period.
