Notes, Scales

This course is designed to cover basic music theory for the uke and guitar.

Topics include major scales, minor scales (all three), the construction of chords within scales, and the Circle of Fifths, a diagram used in music theory that helps students memorize and understand the 24 major and minor keys used in music, key relationships, and many chord relationships.

You will learn how to use the Circle of Fifths to find key signatures, to know sharps and flats in any key, to obtain the relative minor, and to transpose between keys. This is a hands-on class, not one based on long theory lectures. We will play our uke or guitar at the end of every class. All instructional materials will be provided in a course binder.

She earned her doctorate in chemical physics at The University of Virginia and MBA at The University of New Mexico. She regularly teaches courses with LLI in genetics, neuroscience, and health. After retiring, Anne took up music, taking her first ukulele class with LLI. Since then, she has started piano, bass uke, resumed playing the guitar, studies music theory, composes classical music for the piano, and records in her home studio.
