S20C04 Down Rural Roads
This course will explore the local rural roads that lead to vestiges of old American farms that hint of our agrarian past. The instructors have traveled the back roads of the Shenandoah Valley photographing and documenting farm buildings and folk art. We will learn about the evolution of silos, the architecture and function of old barns which reflect the German and Swiss Heritage of their builders, the changing landscape of the farming community, and folk art. The last class meeting will include a field trip that will provide an additional glimpse into local history. We will carpool to sites.Tyre Yancey is an author and photographer, whose work is featured in a 2006 book titled, "Vanishing Farms: Tyre Yancey, Locustcrest Farm, and his Photographic Compendium of Valley Farm Structures". In 2012, Tyre published, "RFD Folk Art", containing photographs of unique folk art mail boxes.
