S20C07 Meet William Faulkner
This course will focus on the works of William Faulkner, who helped initiate the so-called Southern Literary Renaissance with the publication of classic American novels including "The Sound and the Fury", "As I Lay Dying", "Light in August", and "The Hamlet". While Faulkner was serving as writer in residence at the University of Virginia, a questioner asked him which of his novels the uninitiated reader should tackle first, to which he answered: "The Unvanquished". Students in this course will read and discuss "The Unvanquished", followed by a reading of his more sophisticated novel, "As I Lay Dying".Jean Cash, Professor of English emerita, James Madison University. Her specialty is Southern Literature with special emphasis on writers from the Southern Literary Renaissance (1920s) forward. Jean has taught many seminars on the work of William Faulkner.
