S20C09 Ralph Waldo Emerson, Transcendentalist Prophet of Concord
This course will examine Ralph Waldo Emerson's background and examine his contribution to the development of a distinctly American poetry. Emerson, whose portrait adorned the walls of 19th century schoolrooms alongside those of U.S. presidents, was the leader of the American Transcendentalist movement. We will also look at some other members of the American Transcendentalist movement, including the early feminist, Margaret Fuller.
Robin McNallie completed graduate study at Princeton in the field of English. For 33 years, until retirement in 1998, he taught courses in literature, film, and writing at James Madison. Since that time, he has taught courses for LLI on more than 20 topics.
