Medical Billing

James Madison University Outreach & Engagement has partnered with Career Step to help students train for a rewarding new career. The Medical Billing non-credit program helps students develop the knowledge and skills needed to work in healthcare reimbursement. The program focuses on documentation and procedures and includes hands-on exercises that allow students to apply what they learn. Students learn medical terminology, documentation and confidentiality, medical coding basics, and patient billing and collections as well as specialized considerations such as the ICD-10 code set and X12 5010 billing system. In addition to one-on-one support from experienced instructors throughout the course and access to personalized graduate support after graduation, students receive five textbooks and a one-year membership to the American Medical Billing Association.

The Medical Billing program also helps you gain hands-on experience working with industry forms such as UB-04 and CMS-1500 forms. You’ll learn how to fill out this paperwork and then practice by filling out several forms yourself. This experience will help you easily transition to the workplace as soon as you graduate. The program also helps prepare for industry specific certification exams.

The Medical Billing course includes 145 hours of curriculum.

Students have 6 months to complete the non-credit program. Upon successful completion of the program, students receive a Certificate of Completion from James Madison University.
