B10 Archaeological and Historical Perspectives of the Valley at War: 1864

Description: The "Breadbasket of the Confederacy" became the focus of Union attention in 1864 as efforts to end the Civil War intensified. After a clumsy beginning, General Ulysses Grant turned to a new commander, Major General Philip Sheridan, to defeat the Confederate Army of the Valley and bring this region under Union Control. The success of this campaign is believed to have contributed to the re-election of President Lincoln in November of 1864, and to the ending of the war in early 1865. Since 1990, historians and archaeologists at James Madison University have been studying major battlefields in the Valley and have gained new insights into both the battles and their cultural landscapes. This course will present both historical and archaeological perspectives in discussing the Valley at War in 1864. It will review the early failed efforts of the Union to control the Valley but, will concentrate on Sheridan's 1864 Campaign including the Battles of 3d Winchester and Fisher's Hill, the "burning" of the Valley, and culminating with the Battle of Cedar Creek.

Instructor: Clarence Geier is a retired Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at JMU. As a historical archaeologist, he and his students have worked at numerous Civil War battlefields in Virginia. Dr. Geier is the senior editor of five books on military sites' archaeology and the historical archaeology of the American Civil War.
