B12 Rumi's Mystical Views

Description: Rumi is the most well-known Muslim mystic in the West. Books on him have been among the bestsellers in recent years in the U.S. Nevertheless, his main views are not adequately explained and connected to the Sufi tradition of Islam from which they derive. This course will focus on the main views, ideas and teachings of this great Sufi master through reading and interpreting selected poems from two of his books, Mathnawi and Divane Shams. Rumi's views on mystical ideas of love, human nature, human-God relationship, and voluntary death will be explored.

Instructor: Seyed Amir Akrami is the first visiting Muslim scholar at Eastern Mennonite University. He received his Ph.D. in Philosophy of Religion from McGill University, and a B.A. in Islamic Studies and an M.A. in Religions and Mysticism from the University of Tehran.

Suggested Reading: "The Sufi Path of Love: The Spiritual Teaching of Rumi", William Chittick.
