B5 History of Jewish Life in the Central Shenandoah Valley

Description: Using documents and artifacts from the archives of Beth El Congregation, this class will explore the life of Jews in the Central Shenandoah Valley since the middle of the 19th Century. Included will be a tour of both the Synagogue and Beth El Cemetery. There will also be commentaries from long-time members of the community, sharing their life experiences.

Instructors: LLI member Bill Ney has lived in Harrisonburg for more than 46 years and is the fourth generation of his family to live in Harrisonburg. He and his family began operating clothing stores in the Valley in 1868. LLI member Andy Kohen is a Professor Emeritus in Economics at JMU. Dan Bly is a retired history professor from Bridgewater College.
