Van Gogh, Manet & Matisse: The Art of the Flower
The State Arboretum of Virginia at the University of Virginia's Historic Blandy Experimental Farm East of Winchester, Va. Thursday, April 30, 2015
A century ago the ecology of the Blue Ridge, along with much of the eastern United States forests, faced the demise of the majestic American chestnut tree. This disaster was solely human introduced. The foreign chestnut blight decimated our eastern forests and changed forever our Appalachian landscape. Steve Carroll will present a special lecture for LLI participants on Blandy's experimental projects and its cooperative research with the American Chestnut Foundation and the Nature Conservancy. Nate Miller will guide us through a sensory experience in the herb garden and Sandra Conrad will explain some of the culinary uses and the preservation of herbs. Appetites whetted, we will proceed to our picnic lunch (bring your own brown bag picnic lunch and water) - a beverage, fresh fruit compote and dessert will be based on their herb garden's bounties, made by Sandra. Nate will then lead us for our afternoon hike to the Nancy Larrick Crosby Native Plant Trail, "Woodland Section." Over 50 species of native perennials, grasses, and ferns flourish here; 30 species of native trees and shrubs abound. Last but not least we will board our bus to the experimental Chestnut Grove for a short walk to the re-established chestnut forest.
This is an "out of doors" hiking event - dress weather appropriate. Expect walking up to a mile over uneven ground.
The tour package includes the following:
Round-trip motor coach transportation
-----A suggested $2.00 gratuity will be collected by your hosts for the bus driver.
