S16A3 Journey to Cuba

Description: Explore Cuba from cultural, historical and social perspectives including music and a demonstration of traditional Cuban cuisine. We will examine life in Cuba's early slave/plantation-based economy, through the dictatorship of Fidel Castro. We will delve into the hardships of the people, their everyday lives, and their perilous journeys in the quest for freedom, with an eye toward Cuba's evolving future. Our journey will include a session surveying the rich history of Cuban music.

Additional Fees: Additional fee for food not to exceed $8 payable at the first class.


Raul Jorrin-Garcia,
a native Cuban, earned his BA from the University of Havana, and an MS from Strayer University. He has worked as an English and Spanish instructor at high schools, vocational schools, and universities. He was a National Supervisor for nursing colleges, and co-author of an English textbook for nurses.

William C. Van Norman, PhD, is an Associate Professor of History at JMU, coordinator of the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program and affiliated with Women's and Gender Studies and Africana Studies. Current research projects include food as a cultural bridge in 19th Century Cuba and the transformation of western Cuba in the second half of the 19th century.

Ken Nafziger is a Professor of Music at Eastern Mennonite University. In the wider community, he's well known as the conductor of the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival. He has made over a dozen trips to Cuba, and has worked with many of the top ensembles and musicians in the country.

Evangelina (Eva) Carrera Bouza, a native Cuban, is the wife of Raul Jorrin-Garcia. She will prepare traditional Cuban cuisine for a class tasting. Eva holds a degree in accounting from the Institute of Economy in Havana.

Withdrawal/Refund Policy: You may cancel your registration up to one week before the class start date, and receive a full refund (minus any credit card processing fees.) After that date, no refunds will be given.
