S16B7 Renaissance Fame and Fortune: Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael

Description: Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael were the premier Old Masters who defined Italian High Renaissance art. In this class, we will seek to understand the artistic genius, aesthetic harmony and the idealized beauty which they created. We will examine famous artworks, such as Leonardo's Last Supper and the Mona Lisa, Michelangelo's Sistine Ceiling and Raphael's Vatican frescoes and portraits. In addition to these accomplishments, we will discuss their fame in practical terms. What accounts for their successful business careers in their own day? We will consider to what degree their fame was due to their personalities, unusual patrons, Vasari's praise in Lives of the Most Excellent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, and a little bit of luck or good fortune.

Instructor: LLI member Dr. Kay Arthur has taught at JMU for more than thirty years, serving as head of Art History, founder of the Semester in Florence and head of International Programs. She is currently associate curator at the Madison Art Collection. She teaches and researches European Gothic architecture, Italian Renaissance art, and Gothic Revival architecture in the Shenandoah Valley.

Course participants may park in the JMU parking lot without a parking pass for the duration of this course.
