S16B8 Back to the Fifties

Description: Step into Mr. Peabody's Way Back Machine and rediscover the decade of the 50s. From a sixty-plus-year perspective, we'll discuss Cold War politics, racial relations, suburbanization, the Red Scare, Atomic Fear, the space race and the "juvenile delinquent" crises. While exploring music of this decade, we'll examine the social climate with its broad cultural divide between black and white artists and "race music." We'll explore the rise of television and modern movies and how these media reflected and changed society. Was it really the "fabulous fifties?" We'll probe that question and seek to answer it through input and vigorous class discussion.

Suggested Reading: Additional enrichment suggestions will include several films & TV episodes from 1946-1960.
