Harpers Ferry West Virginia National Historical Park: A Lifelong Learning Coach and Walking Trip
Wednesday, April 27, 2016
Harpers Ferry is a picturesque hillside town overlooking the confluence of two rivers: the Shenandoah and the Potomac. Harpers Ferry also happens to be located at the juncture of three states: Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland. Come spend a morning with a Harpers Ferry Park tour guide, certified by the Harpers Ferry Historical Association. Our guide will help us understand the history of Harpers Ferry. He will explore with us the Historic Lower Town as well as other significant features of the National Historical Park. Learn why an American church chose to fly a British flag (the Union Jack) during the Civil War. Discover the beginning of modern factory processes. Ponder why Harpers Ferry was so strategic to both the Union and Confederate Armies, changing hands six times during that conflict. The afternoon is free for you to have lunch on your own at one of the several Lower Town restaurants or bring your own lunch if you wish. After lunch, you will have time to explore the Lower Town bookstore, boutiques, and antique shops. If you wish to walk a bit more, there are a number of short trails and scenic overlooks. Bring your camera. Note: some walking on uneven surfaces and slight to moderate inclines will be part of this tour.
