GO! Take a Hike! Spring 2016 - Rose River Hike
Last fall's "Take a Hike" program was so successful, we will be offering the opportunity to join fellow LLI members again this spring for a series of hikes around our area. Four fun and exercise filled hikes are scheduled for fit hikers. An orientation meeting is required for all hikers signed up for any of the scheduled hikes. These fun hikes are mostly "moderate rated" and chosen for their views, geology, ecology, historical significance and flora. We take frequent "breather" breaks to enjoy and discuss features of interest along the way. The Shenandoah Valley area is a blaze of color with spring wild flowers and the arrival of seasonal song birds. Capture the beauty of the forest and panoramic views on your camera, including wildflowers, mushrooms, waterfalls and cascades. Trails can be on mildly steep, uneven ground, and some creek crossings on rocks may be encountered. Participants need to be flexible on the end times. Every opportunity to schedule make up dates for canceled hikes will be taken. Pets are not permitted. There will be an assumption of risk waiver that will need to be signed at orientation.
Cost is $15 per hike. Class size is limited to 16 persons per hike. Meeting places will vary based on direction of travel from Harrisonburg, however all trips will depart promptly via car pools at 9:00 am. Additional information will be available at the "Preview of Activities" on Tuesday, January 12, 1:00pm at the Gilkerson Activity Center.
DATE: Wednesday, April 20, 12:00 noon, Orientation meeting for all hikers - Gilkerson Activity Center, Westover Park. Bring a lunch, and we will discuss clothing, equipment, weather concerns, safety issues and answer any questions. This will be an opportunity to meet fellow hikers and guides. An assumption of risk waver is to be signed by all participants.
DATE: May 11, Rose River Hike, SNP: Depart 9:00 a.m. from American National University parking lot, 1515 Country Club Rd. Trail head is MP 49.4. This is a circuit hike to Rose River Falls and return via Hogcamp Branch, total circuit is four miles, total elevation change about 900 ft., time about four hours. A few small parts of the trail are rough, and a few steep. You will see dozens of pools, cascades and small falls along the way. You will pass an old abandoned copper mine, a pre-park home site, and a favorite campsite of Native Americans, as many arrowheads have been found here.
Jerry Hopkins is an active hiker throughout the year and a member of the PATC. Also, he maintains a portion of the Appalachian Trail in Shenandoah National Park as part of the PATC's trail maintenance program. Jerry currently serves as president of the Headwaters (Augusta and Rockingham) Master Naturalist chapter.
Jim Lawson whose mother and maternal grandparents were among the displaced families in the creation of the park, has made the park history an ongoing study, including the sites of former homes, schools, churches and cemeteries.
