S17C12 American Prison Literature

An analysis of a historically broad, thematic sampling of select letters, essays, book and journal excerpts, by those incarcerated primarily but not exclusively for political conviction, race, religion, women's rights, climate activism. Our goal is to understand the historical, political, and social justice contexts within which incarceration occurs.

Instructor: Steve Smith an immigration attorney at John Elledge & Associates PC, Harrisonburg, Virginia. He earlier worked as an Investigator for the Virginia Indigent Defense Commission. Steve holds a JD and an M.A. in Latin American Studies.

Additional Fees: $20 course pack payable to the instructor at the first class.
