S18T8 An Insider's Tour of Staunton

With its architectural beauty, wide-ranging arts and cultural activities, culinary delights, and historical treasures, Staunton abounds in stimulating and pleasurable educational experiences.

Bob Bersson, JMU Professor Emeritus of Art and Art History and leader of Lifelong Learning Institute’s annual “Insider Tours” to Florence and Venice, will be your trip organizer and guide. As with these two Italian cities, we will walk all around Staunton and explore its many treasures. These include The Frontier Culture Museum, Trinity Church with its remarkable Tiffany stained glass windows, the Beverly Street Art Gallery, Blackfriars American Shakespeare Theater for a play, the Sunspot glassblowing studio, RR Smith History and Art Center, and numerous other venues. Culinary delights along the way will encompass coffees, pastries, olive oil and balsamic vinegar tastings, and gelato as well as down-home and fine-dining possibilities.

Fees: The fee for the trip is $35, to be paid to JMU LLI. Each individual will pay for her or his own tickets to special venues like Blackfriars Theater, the Frontier Culture Museum, and the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace though we may get special group rates for these. (Entry to almost all other venues will be free of charge.) Once our group of 12 persons is finalized, I will help to coordinate reservations at Blackfriars, Frontier Culture, Woodrow Wilson, and other places. For those who would like to stay overnight at the historic Stonewall Jackson Hotel—hopefully all of you!--we will be receiving a special group rate of $115 per room. The trip is designed primarily for those staying overnight but will welcome those who want to attend one or both daylong tours, if spaces are available.

A final note. You need to be in good physical shape for this trip as it will involve a good deal of walking up and down Staunton’s many hills and around the Frontier Culture Museum.

Withdrawal/Refund Policy: You may cancel your registration up to one week before the class start date, and receive a full refund (minus any credit card processing fees.) After that date, no refunds will be given.
