Home Electronics Certificate Program - Online

The Home Electronics curriculum is designed to fulfill the growing requirement of trained professionals in the area of Home Technology Automation. In fact, home technology integrators anticipate seeing nearly 15 percent growth in their business in 2007, according to a January survey by CE Pro magazine. That follows a year (2006) in which integrators said they experienced revenue growth of 35 percent.

But home technology integration firms face a challenge in finding individuals with the right skills.

"The worlds of consumer electronics and information technology (IT) are converging in the connected home of the 21st century," said Todd Thibodeaux, CEA's senior vice president, industry relations. "Technicians must have skills in both worlds to provide the product installation, integration, service and support that consumers need to fully enjoy a connected home lifestyle."

This program will address the core competencies required to install, integrate and troubleshoot interconnected home subsystems, including entertainment, telecommunication, lighting, HVAC, water management, security and access control systems. The program explores the design approach, working principles, processes, and standards that apply to the Home Technology industry. The program equips students with skills essential for building long-term customer relationship, creating better sales opportunities, and providing efficient customer services.

This program prepares students with the following skills:

Technical Mathematics: Mathematical skills required in day-to-day functions as HTI professionals such as number systems, algebra, analytic geometry, and fundament trigonometry.

Electrical and Electronic Fundamentals: Basic concepts and skills that students will require when they work electrical equipment such as resistors, capacitors, amplifiers, and oscillators, circuits, electrical test equipment and diagnostic tools, safety measures, codes, and rules and regulations that must be followed for preventing mishaps.

Computer and Networking Fundamentals: Basic computer and networking operations such as CPUs, motherboards, storage technologies, and operation systems, networking principles, types of networks, setting up the Internet on a home computer, install, configure and troubleshoot a computer, monitor the performance of a PC, optimize system resources, and correct common problems.

Home Network Design and Configuration: Design, implement, and maintain a home network, install components, networking protocols, network operating systems, network addressing, and security, troubleshoot and manage a home network.

Home Technology: Tools, Products, and Services: Understand how to use industry information to better qualify sales prospects for HTI products, systems, and services and to better support customers. Possess a broad understanding of the various products and systems for meeting customer requirements. Understand the historical events that have led the industry to its current state, working principles, design approach, and technical and marketing concepts. Understand the major commercial participants, common practices, and prevalent consumer perception of HTI benefits, the concept of an Integrated Home Network (IHN) and the tools, equipment, and expertise required to build it.

Wiring Installation: Perform pre-wiring, rough-in, and trim-out operations in both new and retrofit constructions. Understand wiring standards, safety standards, and rules and regulation that govern wiring installation and implementation.

Home Entertainment Systems: Implement distributed audio and video systems in a residential location. Understand current industry standards, rules, and regulations that govern home audio-video system installation and implementation. Plan, design, install, and troubleshoot entertainment systems installed in a household, based on client requirements and other technical considerations for both new and retrofit constructions.

Home Telecommunication Systems: Design, install, and configure home telecommunication systems, including advanced wired and wireless systems. Install in-house services, such as voice mail, intercom, and call conferencing, test and troubleshoot.

Lighting, Temperatures, and Water Control Systems: Automation and effective management of lighting, heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC); and water systems. Understand current industry standards, rules and regulations pertaining to the three systems. Plan, design, install, and configure the three systems based on client requirements and other technical considerations. Detect and troubleshoot common problems.

Security, Surveillance, and Access Control Systems: Plan, Design and install home security and access control systems, both wired and wireless security systems. Identify and troubleshoot common problems.

Project Management: Project planning, scheduling, risk management and effective project control. Document plans such as schematic and floor plans.

Customer Support and Service Management: Building customer relationships for providing excellent service and support. Use business etiquette to manage conflicts and stressful situations.

Effective Sales Strategies: Sell HTI systems, products, and services. Understand the nuances of the sales process and gauge customer psychology. Identify, meet and convince prospective customers and making sales deals.

Business Communication: Use effective oral, written, and non-verbal communication skills. Understand and build rapport with clients. Manage conflicts and tackle stressful situations.

Home System Automation and Integration: Bring all the home subsystems together and create a fully integrated home. Set up and program automation controllers for complete home automation. Troubleshoot and identify technical problems with system user interfaces or control processors.

Technical Graphics: Create, manipulate, and dimension objects in drawings using CAD software. Create auxiliary view, sectional view, and multi-view drawings using CAD software. Create and interpret floor plans and wiring schematics.

Advanced and Emerging Home Technologies: Understand new technologies that have already begun to influence the HTI industry such as WiFi, ZigBee, Blue-tooth, Ultra Wideband (UWB), and Zensys' Z-Wave wireless RF communication protocol in terms of their growing importance for Home Automation. Understand technologies that enable automated lifts, automated doors and windows, and motorized screens.
