A12 American Prison Literature

Description: Through an interdisciplinary approach, this class will analyze an historically broad sampling of select letters, essays, book and journal excerpts written by those incarcerated in the United States primarily for political reasons. Examples include anti-Vietnam War protestors, mid-19th century slave narratives and one from a Confederate sympathizer, early 19th century Anarchists and Socialists, Civil Rights and Black Power Movement activists. We will also explore related contemporary literature.

Suggested Reading: Henry David Thoreau's On the Duty of Civil Disobedience. Any edition.

Instructor: Steve Smith holds a JD from Western New England College School of Law and an M.A. in Latin American Studies from the University of New Mexico. His publications have appeared in The Mennonite Quarterly Review, Latin American Perspectives, and Communities magazine. Most recently he edited a book with JMU Justice Studies Professor, Terry D. Beitzel, titled One-Hundred Years of Service Through Community: A Gould Farm Reader. University Press of America. Spring 2014.
