Se;f-Compassion: The Science, Practice and Transformation

Self-compassion practice is often misunderstood, yet a growing body of research indicates it is a more accurate measure of mental health than self-esteem. This course will clearly define the three elements of self-compassion, challenge common myths and misconceptions, explore the neuroscience and research behind this practice, and provide participants with a variety of means for cultivating their own self-compassion practice. The class will include instruction, discussion and experiential learning. While an academic understanding of self-compassion may be obtained in class, true acquisition of this skill comes from assignments and practice between classes.

Instructor: Deirdre Staton is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Since completing her education at Virginia Commonwealth University, Deirdre has spent over 20 years as a therapist working in inpatient psychiatric settings, emergency services, hospice, corrections, and community mental health, and is currently in private practice. She has found self-compassion practice transformative in her own life and is pursuing certification as a teacher of Mindful Self-Compassion.

Suggested Reading: Helpful but not required readings include: Self-Compassion (2011) by Kristin Neff and The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion (2009) by Christopher Germer.
