F19A11 C. S. Lewis: His Life, Works, & the Deep Magic

This course explores the journey through the life of C. S. Lewis as he struggled with issues of faith, reason, imagination, and literature. This course follows Lewis as he achieves progressive illumination and great literary excellence. It explores his intellectual commitments and his rich and varied writings from theology, philosophy, medieval literature, science fiction, to children's fantasy.

Instructor: Ray Schneider first experienced Lewis when he read "Out of the Silent Planet" and then "The Abolition of Man." He has studied the life and work of C. S. Lewis ever since. He's the moderator of the C. S. Lewis Yahoo chat group, "SpareOom" and was the facilitator of the C. S. Lewis Society of Harrisonburg.

Suggested Reading: Students are encouraged to read Lewis's autobiographical account "Surprised by Joy," "Mere Christianity," "Screwtape Letters," and any other Lewis works.
