F19A15 Getting Started in CalligraphyCalligraphy comes from the Greek words "kalos," meaning beautiful, and "graphos," meaning writing. The word calligraphy can refer to any elegant form of writing. We will begin with the study of two forms of lettering: Italics and Black Letter. From there we will explore freeform script and embellishments and borders to create finished works of art that make use of words and imagery.
Instructor: Mary Shira teaches art history, studio painting, and creativity at JMU. She has been a professional artist and illustrator for over 35 years, working out of her studio and for clients such as Hearst Publishing and Rosetta Stone.
Additional Fee: Supplies for the class will be $25.00 payable to the instructor the first day of class.
