No Fear Poetry
This course will focus on reading poetry, not writing poetry.
Each week we will engage in a close reading of a few poems from the English and American literary traditions. After a review of some terms important to literary study (e.g., diction, syntax, image, metaphor, meter), we will examine both the formal elements and the themes of some poems.
The poetry for each class will center on a specific theme: innocence and experience, love relationships, faith and doubt, encounters with nature, and aging and the presence of death.
After earning a doctorate from the University of Virginia, John Noffsinger taught English for 38 years in three independent schools before retiring in 2014.
