S20A22 Miles Davis in American Culture
This course looks at the life and music of trumpeter Miles Davis (1926-1991). Davis' playing, band leading skills, and ability to identify and direct new musical trends helped to change jazz at least three times, as he pioneered cool, modal, and fusion jazz. Using recordings, videos, and interview excerpts, we will examine Davis' impact on the development of jazz and American Culture in the latter half of the 20th century.
Mr. Connell is a Professor of Music at James Madison University. An ethnomusicologist with a Ph.D. from UCLA, he is also a professional clarinetist and saxophonist who performs in contexts ranging from Brazilian music to classical and jazz.
