S20C05 Beginning Birding
This course provides an introduction to birding, one of the fastest-growing hobbies, with both classroom sessions and field birding. We will explore our local birds: year-round, winter, and summer residents, along with migrants that briefly pass through. Learn how to recognize birds by shape, size, behavior, plumage and habitat. Topics will include how to observe birds, birding etiquette, and use of binoculars and field guides. We will explore backyard birding, attracting birds, and birding afield. Students will need to provide their own binoculars and field guide.
An avid birder and photographer, Diane Lepkowski serves on the Virginia Society of Ornithology Board of Directors and is Rockingham Bird Club's Vice-President of Field trips. With a B.S. in Education, she is a teacher at heart and loves inspiring others to learn more about the amazing world of birds.
