Day of Caring - United Way of Harrisonburg & Rockingham CountyLearn about Rockingham County with on board guide Paul Roth, on an all-day bus trip. The first stop is at the Heritage Museum in Dayton, home of the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society. We then head north to the Breneman Turner Mill, the only surviving pre-Civil War mill in the county. In Broadway we stop at the John Kline Homestead -- a minister's story of dedication, struggle and death during the Civil War. The third stop is at Long's Chapel, to view the remains of Zenda, the African American settlement built by freed slaves. Final stop is at Harrisonburg's Lucy F. Simms Continuing Education Center, named to commemorate the former slave and teacher who fostered a sense of community and academic excellance. The exhibit was produced by JMU students and their professors, Dr. Mollie Godfrey and Dr. Seán McCarthy, working in collaboration with countless community members and the Shenandoah Valley Black Heritage Project in association with Billo Harper.
