A2 Greek Tragedy or Songs for a Goat

Description: This class will consider the characteristics of Greek tragedy, including Aristotle's definition, as well as the structure and purpose of Greek theater. Students will read a play from each of the three greatest Greek dramatists: Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. Students will need copies of Agamemnon, Oedipus Rex, and Medea. They may also expect to be active participants in the dramatic process and ultimately decide who gets the goat.

Instructor: Sue Nickels is a retired secondary English teacher with an M.A. in English from JMU. She also taught four years in the English Department and the College of Education at JMU, and her last four years in the classroom were spent teaching English in Cairo, Egypt.
