B6 Who's Afraid of Henry James?

Description: Many think of Henry James as a difficult, even daunting, author - a reputation explained in large part by his later and longer works such as The Ambassadors and The Golden Bowl. However, James' novellas (short novels), are less formidable, and some believe that in them, he displayed his greatest mastery. This course will examine three of these novels: (1) Daisy Miller (both popular and notorious on its American publication in 1878); (2) The Aspern Papers (battle over a dead poet's papers, set in Venice); and (3) The Turn of the Screw (one of literature's great ghost stories). The 1960 film, The Innocents, based on The Turn of the Screw, will be shown at the final class meeting. Students can find these stories in Great Short Stories of Henry James (Skyhorse Publishing, 2014), available from Daedalus Publishers, ISBN #978-1-62873-786-8; or read them free online at http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/authors/j
