C11 Globalizing Harrisonburg

Description: Almost 15 percent of Harrisonburg's population is foreign born, comprised of people who have come from more than 40 different countries, with most arriving during the past two decades. This course will explore a variety of factors that have contributed to this increasing diversity, with a special focus on the three largest immigrant groups in the local area. Invited guest speakers will include members of each of these three groups, as well as community service providers. They will help present a kaleidoscopic view of the "globalization" of Harrisonburg. A fee not exceeding $12 for ethnic foods will be collected at the first class.

Instructor: LLI member Laura Zarrugh, is a cultural anthropologist who received her Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, where her dissertation and subsequent research have focused on immigrant, refugee and ethnic groups in the United States. For the past 10 years she has been engaged in long-term, ethnographic research on recent immigrants in the Central Shenandoah Valley. She has taught courses on immigrants at JMU, Blue Ridge Community College, and Bridgewater College.
