S16C2 Down Rural Roads

Description: Local rural roads lead to vestiges of old American farms that hint of our agrarian past. This course addresses the evolution of silos, the architecture and function of old barns (many of which reflect the German and Swiss heritage of their builders), the changing landscape of the farming community, and folk art. Here we can glimpse our historical past. The last class will feature a related field trip that provides additional glimpses into local history. "I'll never look at our farmlands the same. They did a great job opening our eyes to the wonders of the local countryside." Comment from a previous participant.

Instructor: Tyre Yancey is an author and photographer. His work resulted in a 2006 book titled, Vanishing Farms: Tyre Yancey, Locustcrest Farm, and his Photographic Compendium of Valley Farm Structures. In 2012, he and wife Jane published RFD Folk Art, containing photographs of unique folk art mailboxes.

Course participants may park in the JMU parking lot without a parking pass for the duration of this course.
