S16C7 The Dark Worlds of Poe, Hawthorne & Melville

Description: Herman Melville wrote that the stories of Nathaniel Hawthorne, his fellow author and temporary neighbor, conveyed the "great power of blackness." This course will examine the implications of that observation as it relates to the fiction not only of Hawthorne, but of Poe and Melville himself. Among the stories for consideration are Poe's "The Masque of the Red Death" and "William Wilson," Hawthorne's "The Celestial Railroad" and "The Birthmark," and Melville's "Benito Cereno." All the assigned readings for the course are widely available in print form and/or digitally.

Suggested Reading: Titles listed above.
